NORDIC COURSE in STRING THEORIES

29 July - 7 August 2003 at NORDITA

NORDITA is organizing in Copenhagen a Nordic course in string theory.

The course will start in the morning on July 29th and will finish at lunch time on August 7th.

The course consists of 10 day intensive teaching (4 hours per day during the first part of the day).
The second part of the day will be used by the students for studying the topics discussed in the lectures, for doing the exercises and for asking questions. Sunday, August 3rd will be a free day.

The course is addressed to Nordic master and PhD students who have a good knowledge of field theory and some superficial knowledge of string theory and who are strongly motivated to learn in a short time some of the exciting developments occurred recently in string theory.

The topics that will be discussed in the lectures are the following:

  1. Basics of the bosonic string and superstring.
  2. Properties of D branes and of the gauge theory living on them.
  3. Maldacena conjecture and generalization to non-conformal theories.
  4. Brane world scenario.
  5. String on a pp-wave background and properties of N=4 super Yang-Mills.
  6. The Dijkgraaf-Vafa approach to N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories.
  7. String cosmology.
  8. M-theory and string dualities..

The Speakers will be: U. Danielsson (Uppsala), P. Di Vecchia (NORDITA), G. Ferretti, (Göteborg), C. Floe Kristjansen (Copenhagen), N. Obers (Copenhagen), F. Ravndal (Oslo) and L. Thorlacius (Reykjavik).

NORDITA is able to support living expenses for Nordic students in Copenhagen up to a certain number of students allowed by the funds at disposal.

Travel expenses should be supported by their own institution or by their national research council.

In order to increase the probability of receiving financial support from NORDITA for living expenses it is recommended to apply as soon as possible.

Deadline for application: 15 May 2003: CLOSED
